        Bilateral Integration

      • Individuals with bilateral Integration and sequencing deficits are unable to use the two sides of their body together efficiently or sequence motor actions in a smooth co-ordinated way. This impacts on many areas of daily life, such as dressing, tying shoelaces, skipping, hopping, jumping, cycling, ball sports, throwing and catching balls. The individual is required not only to coordinate upper and bottom half of their body, but the left and right sides of their bodies also, in an orderly sequence.

Bilateral Integration is an evidenced based intervention, which targets improved synchronisation of the two brain hemispheres to affect changes in both cognitive and motor systems promoting integration and connectivity in the brain. This intervention is applicable across the entire spectrum of ability from children with developmental disorders to elite athletes.

It is a drug free, non-invasive intervention, and can be incorporated into individual or group programs from preschool through to an adult population. The purpose is to continually excite or inhibit motor, sensory, or behaviorial manifestations in children or adult as may be necessary.

Many children with developmental disorders and typically developing children with poor motor performance often present with additional cognitive deficits. There is now a strong evidence base supporting the link between motor performance and cognition recognising the links between cerebellum, movement and cognition along with an understanding of the neurophysiology of learning difficulties and the implication of poor integration at the level of hemisphere function.
